Background of Hong Kong Ideation Arts Festival
Hong Kong Ideation Arts Festival (HKIAF) is a rebranding of Let’s be Together Arts Festival x Hong Kong (LBTAFHK), curated by Cathy SK Lam-Patrie, the artistic director of Kairos Arts Development, since 2018. Kairos Arts Development Company Limited is established in 2020 and has become an approved charitable donation undersection 88 of the Hong Kong Inland Revenue Ordinance. Our service target is mainly artists and the community. Our predecessor company was ThreeWoods Playwright,* and we have established Kairos because of the restructuring of the company from theater producing to art curating.
*Established in April 2011, which focuses on text-based theatre, admires the beauty of text and respects any text. In September 2011, ThreeWoods Playwright was officially registered as a non-profit theatre company in Hong Kong. We believe in GOD, humanity, and theatre. Our production can be seen in Europe, Australia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Mainland. We know this road is long and tough, but it is also fascinating to keep us moving on.
LBTAFHK is a very unique arts festival. As art practitioners, we are aware that it is not easy to
survive in the industry. Even with basics like venue rental, prices are not something that most
artists can easily afford. Our concept is to provide in the most practical way – free venue, free
basic equipment, free promotion, printings, tickets and administration support, etc. We want to build a platform for artists that allows them to focus on arts and creativity. In addition, 100% of ticket and art sales go to the artists’ pockets in order to promote their self-sustainability. We also collaborate with local stores and organizations to support and strengthen the local arts community.
In the past few years, LBTAFHK has worked with more than 60 arts organizations and has attracted over 5,500 audience participants. Based on our experience and evaluation from the previous festivals, we decided to rebrand the festival as Hong Kong Ideation Arts Festival so that we can build an arts festival that best suits the needs of local artists. We want to curate an arts festival that focuses on fringe production, prepares artists for fringe touring, and supports creativity and innovation.
Vision of Hong Kong Ideation Arts Festival (HKIAF)
HKIAF is a curated arts festival. Applicant MUST apply as an individual, and the main production team including performers cannot be more than four people.
The purpose of the limit on the number of people is to fit the needs of the local arts industry,
providing more opportunities for individual artists and small art companies. As per our past
experience, it is easier to build a prolonged dialogue and focused discussion with small art groups. Through discussion, we are able to provide relevant support and suggestions to produce better artwork. In addition, we have different arts exchange awards with overseas fringe festivals, for which small groups tend to have a better chance of being selected. In order to offer a fairer award opportunity to all participants, we decided to limit the number of people. We want to re-sign the idea that “only big productions are good productions” and focus on ideas and creativity.
Our concept is to provide in the most practical way: free venue, free basic equipment, free
promotion, printings, tickets and administration support, etc. We want to build a platform for
artists that allows them to focus on arts and creativity. Every artist will get to perform two shows. In addition, 100% of ticket and art sales go to the artists’ pockets in order to promote their self-sustainability. There is no hidden administrative charge.
